Emily awoke the next morning feeling shrouded by a dark fog. When she remembered her near kiss with Liam, she felt even worse. Did he think her fast? Mad? After the look in his eyes afterward, she doubted he'd ever look on her with longing again.

She groaned and stared at the ceiling.

“What were you and Liam talking about last night?”

Emily turned over and propped her head in her hand. “I thought you were asleep then.”

Tinker sat on the edge of her bed, fluffing her hair with her fingers. “I woke up at some point but was too tired to move.”

“I had a nightmare and I must've cried out. Liam came in asking me if I was okay.”

“A nightmare?”

“Yes, it was horrid. That odious coin dealer was in it.”

Tinker's hand stilled. “What happened in the dream?”

“It was unpleasant to say the least and I'd rather not revisit it.”

The blonde leaned forward, lines of strain evident around her eyes. “Please?”

Talking about the dream reminded her too much of her failure with Liam, but she related the events, cringing when she got to the part where Tinker died.

Tinker's eyes bulged and her face paled. “You're right,” she whispered. “It's horrid.”

“I'm sorry. I should not have told you.”

Tinker stood and took a deep breath. “No, I wanted to hear it.” She went to the bathroom and shut the door with a snap.

Well, I've managed to offend both my host and hostess merely by giving them what they requested. Her face heated as she remembered the near kiss. As in the telling of the dream.

She wondered how she could face Liam now, but she'd been terrified that touching her lips to his could've precipitate an unwanted trip to Cornwall. By some magic she'd been brought forward two centuries. By the same path she could surely be returned. She didn't dare risk that happening.

Emily wondered why it was so easy to leave the home of her birth behind. But after her parents died, she'd never felt like she belonged. In her imagination and daydreams she'd traveled to far off, exotic places. What could be more exotic than two hundred years in the future?

Anyway, why didn't Liam believe her? She had no trouble believing she was in the future—the evidence was manifest. But she knew he still suspected her of lying. Unfortunately she didn't have absolute proof. It was too bad Liam couldn't get a glimpse into her world. What would he think of her manse, of the ivy-covered mellow brick and wild roses? Of her strict aunt? Of the mores of London? How would he look in Weston's finest tailoring, stretched across his shoulders without a wrinkle, buff breeches molded to his legs, boots with tassels, polished to a high shine...

“What are you sighing about?”

Emily gasped and twisted around to see Liam poking his head through the shared doorway.

He raised his brows. “I knocked.”

She tugged the blankets more closely around her frame, feeling shy after what had not happened between them.

“Where's Tinker?”

“Bathroom.”

“Tell her to meet in the lobby when she's ready.
